There is something about fall that makes us want to rethink what we wear. The light changes. Our wardrobes become richer in color and texture. Linen gives way to cashmere, open necklines become crisp collars and soft knits, and suddenly the jewelry that felt perfect in July can be switched for different looks.
Fall invites us to layer, mix, and experiment. Substantial gold, richly colored gemstones, pearls, meaningful pendants, and classic diamond designs are at home alongside autumn fabrics and deeper colors.
Trends can be inspiring but may not reflect the way you really live. A better approach is to notice the ideas that appeal to you, then interpret them in a way that feels personal and lasting. Here are some of my favorite ways to wear jewelry as we move into fall.
Give Gold a Little More Presence
Yellow gold is a perennial favorite and is back in style with different scale and texture. As fabrics become heavier, jewelry can take on a little more scale.
A substantial bracelet, for example, looks wonderful peeking out from beneath the cuff of a sweater or jacket. Polished gold earrings can instantly brighten the face and work just as easily with jeans and a blazer as well as with an evening dress.
You don't want to wear several bold pieces at once. Sometimes one beautifully proportioned gold piece provides exactly the right accent.
Bring Richer Gemstone Colors Into the Mix
Fall and colored gemstones are a natural pairing. Sapphires, emeralds, tourmalines, and other richly colored stones stand out beautifully against deeper fabrics and autumn textures. I love allowing one gemstone to become an unexpected focal point in an otherwise simple outfit.
A subtly colorful bead necklace, for example, can be striking against a cream blouse or navy sweater. Multicolor tourmaline offers even more freedom because its range of shades works with so many different colors. This year some of the clothing colors are quite strong and a large hoop or bold bracelet is all you need.
One of my favorite styling lessons applies particularly well here: don't be too “matchy-matchy”. Rather than have a matching set you can blend colors and textures.
Layer Necklaces With Fall Necklines
Fall clothing creates entirely new opportunities. The key is adjusting the scale and length of your jewelry to suit heavier fabrics and higher necklines.
With an open collar, you might wear a shorter chain against the skin and allow a longer pendant to fall below it. Over a fine-gauge turtleneck, a more substantial pendant or longer chain can become the focal point of the outfit.
Meaningful pieces are especially lovely for layering. Lockets, medallions, hearts, and symbolic pendants add something beyond decoration. They give the combination a personal story.
And don't worry about creating perfect symmetry. A layered jewelry look should feel collected rather than calculated.
Make Pearls Feel Like Your Own
Pearls are timeless, which is precisely why they can be reinvented again and again.
They don't have to be reserved for formal occasions, and they don’t have to be styled in the traditional way. Unexpected proportions and combinations with gold or diamonds can give pearls a completely different personality.
Try Tahitian grey pearl earrings with a leather jacket or a beautiful knit. Layer a pearl necklace with your favorite gold chains. Wear pearls with denim and loafers. The contrast is what makes the look interesting and trendy.
Wear Your Diamonds During the Day
I've always believed that beautiful jewelry should be worn and enjoyed, and diamonds are certainly no exception. A classic diamond piece doesn't need to wait for a cocktail dress or special celebration.
Diamond earrings can add just enough sparkle to an everyday outfit. A bezel-set diamond bracelet looks wonderful beside a gold bracelet or watch. Even a classic tennis bracelet can feel surprisingly relaxed when worn with a crisp white shirt, sweater, or tailored jacket.
Diamonds are remarkably adaptable that way. Their elegance doesn't depend on the occasion. Wear them to dinner, of course. But wear them to lunch, too.
Mix Old Jewelry With New Pieces
Some of the most interesting jewelry wardrobes I've seen have been built over decades rather than seasons. A modern gold band might sit beside an inherited diamond ring. A grandmother's pendant can be worn on a contemporary chain. Vintage style earrings can become the unexpected finishing touch to an otherwise minimalist outfit.
This kind of mixing creates depth and individuality.
I don't think a jewelry collection should look as though everything was purchased at the same time or from the same place. Your jewelry reflects different chapters of your life: gifts, celebrations, travels, family history, personal discoveries, and pieces you simply fell in love with. Those differences are what make a collection interesting.
Look at Your Jewelry Box With Fresh Eyes
A change of season is also a wonderful excuse to revisit pieces you haven't worn in some time. Take everything out. Try pieces on again. Experiment with combinations you may not have considered before.
You may discover that an older pendant looks completely different on a new chain. A ring you've always worn alone might feel fresh stacked beside a simple gold band. A brooch could become an unexpected accent on a fall jacket.
And then there are the pieces you love emotionally but simply don't wear.
Perhaps you inherited a diamond ring that feels too traditional for your style. Maybe you have a brooch with beautiful gemstones but no occasion to wear it. Or there is a necklace tucked away because the setting no longer feels like you. Those pieces deserve another look.
Reimagining Jewelry While Preserving Its Story
Jewelry redesign is one of the parts of my work that I find most rewarding because it allows us to preserve the past without being confined by it.
Through my jewelry redesign services at EFG Designs, I work with clients to explore what an existing piece could become. Diamonds might be reset into a more wearable ring. Gemstones from an older brooch could become a pendant or bracelet. A dated setting can sometimes be simplified while preserving the elements that give the piece its sentimental importance.
The goal isn't to erase its history. It's to give that history another chapter.
Ultimately, fall jewelry style doesn't need to be about chasing trends. It can simply be an invitation to look at your collection differently. Add a little more gold. Bring out a beautiful gemstone. Layer your necklaces. Wear your pearls unexpectedly. Put on those diamonds you've been saving.
And perhaps take another look at the jewelry already waiting in your jewelry box. The most enduring style is rarely about what's fashionable for a single season. It's about finding new ways to wear the pieces that feel like you.
